The project will be on theÊHealth and Care Research Wales Clinical Research Portfolio, with the chief investigator aligned to Aneurin Bevan UHB.

The project builds on previously undertaken work which explored how health workers perceive their personal responsibility for infection prevention:

Gould, DJ, Hale, R, Waters, E, Allen, D 2016. Normalisation Process Theory: a new paradigm to analyse and interpret strategies to prevent and control healthcare-associated infection.Ê

The project aims are to:

  • explore health workersÕ understanding of their own personal responsibility for infection prevention and need to reduce risks of antibiotic resistance
  • compare personal responsibility across occupational groups, clinical services (from consultants to cleaners) and staff at different levels of seniority
  • identify innovative types of interventions that can be recommended to encourage personal responsibility in future
  • identify the resources necessary and barriers and facilitators to success
  • compare infection prevention between acute and community hospitals and make recommendations for equitable care as necessary.
