Creative Writing at Birmingham is part of the Department of Film and Creative writing, and is closely aligned to the Departments of English Literature and English Language and Applied Linguistics, allowing you to benefit from our breadth of expertise.
- This practice-based PhD will support you in the development of a long-form piece of creative writing, or a sequence of related works. You will also identify critical concerns and interests related to your creative practice. The final submission is divided between the creative piece and a related critical document.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- A MA degree in creative writing or relevant professional experience
- A detailed description of the creative project
- two references from people familiar with your academic work
- Resume
- Statement about reasons for pursuing a research degree
English Language Requirements:
- IELTS: minimum 6.5 with minimum 6.0 in each band
- TOEFL: minimum 88 with 21 in reading; 21 in listening; 21 in writing and 22 in speaking
- PTE: 59 in all four skills
- Cambridge English: minimum 176 with 169 in each subskill
Indian Student Specific Requirements:
- Applicants should hold a bachelors degree with a completed masters degree
- Minimum 60% required from a recognized university
