As per a British High Commission Report, 65,500 skilled worker visas were issued to Indian citizens in the previous year. These statistics account for a 14% increase than the number in 2019 indicating the popularity of the point-based immigration system.

In 2021, UK and India signed an agreement on migration and movement, increasing migratory cooperation and facilitating youth mobility. There are several legal alternatives to operate in UK viz. Skilled worker, graduate, and health and care worker routes. 

Furthermore, the number of Indian citizens who have been granted skilled workers visas have approximately hiked to 110 percent to what it was in 2020. Indians and Nigerians are supposed to be the most benefitted from these visas.

Overall, 239,987 work visas were issued in UK in 2021, including dependent visas. Out of this number, 150,000 visas were for skilled workers which depict an increase of 25% when compared to the data in 2019, prior to the pandemic.

To be eligible for a skilled workers visa in the UK, one must satisfy the following criteria:

  • Produce a “certificate of sponsorship” from the company you are working in, providing your designation details in the UK.
  • Experience from a UK business that has acquired Home Office approval.
  • Must be paid a minimum wage, which varies as per the sort of work you are into.
  • Work in one of the jobs that come under the list of eligible occupations.

As far as the trade discussions are concerned, India and UK are planning to lower immigration rules. Last year, India and UK formalized their partnership on migration and mobility. Under this proposal, it is expected that around 3,000 young students and professionals would have the advantage of additional work experience in either of the countries. It would be fully functional by April 2022.
