As per a recent report published by the International Rent Index for Q1 2022, housing rents across Europe have risen by 14.5% in the last year. The report also mentions that Paris has become one of the most expensive cities on the continent, for both a 1BHK apartment and a private room. The rent of a one-bedroom apartment in Paris is around €1,978 followed closely by London at €1,940.

HousingAnywhere, a leading platform for rental accommodation surveyed around 133,736 properties during the period between March 2021 to March 2022. It was seen that the recent hike in rent has exceeded pre-pandemic rates.

Around 22 European cities were surveyed for the report, out of which only two cities registered a drop in rent. Brussels recorded a drop of around 1.1% wheres Helsinki displayed a decrease of 5.9% in rent for private rooms.

Juan Rayon, President of Erasmus Student Network, commented that universities, housing providers and local authorities should hold discussions on how to reduce rents and offer a better experience to international students.

He added that high rents are not the only problems faced by international students. Accommodation quality issues, fraud and scamming are also some of the issues faced by foreign students while looking for housing.
