New Delhi: Former dean of engineering at UC Berkeley, Shankar Sastry has received numerous honours and accomplishments throughout his academic career.

Shankar Sastry, a former dean of engineering at UC Berkeley, is welcomed as the new founding chancellor of Plaksha University in Mohali. He has graduated from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay with a BTech degree .

From UC Berkeley, he had earned his MA in mathematics, MS, and PhD in electrical engineering and computer sciences (EECS). The Thomas Siebel distinguished professor of computer science at UC Berkeley is Sastry's current position. In his academic career, Sastry has co-authored almost 600 technical publications and 10 books.

He has held a number of roles throughout his academic career, including that of director of the information technology office at the defence advanced research projects agency (DARPA), Arlington, and chair of the EECS department at UC Berkeley. Additionally, he taught at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

His personal research interests include cybersecurity, autonomous robotic vehicles and robots, computer vision, nonlinear and adaptive control, control of hybrid and embedded systems, resilient cyber-physical systems, mechanism design, and incentive theory for the digital transformation system of complex societal scale systems networks.

Besides being recognised for his academic accomplishments, Sastry has received a number of prestigious awards, such as the President of India Gold Medal in 1977, the IBM Faculty Development Award in 1983, and the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award in 1985.

Higher education is at a turning point, according to S Shankar Sastry, who was recently named Chancellor of Plaksha University. A teaching experience at the intersection of technology, entrepreneurship, and design must be offered to students. Additionally, we must encourage them to take on the complex, enormous challenges that face our society today. For me, it is a privilege and a thrilling challenge to have the chance to be a member of Plaksha Institution, which has a distinctive model for becoming a contemporary research university with a new pedagogy and vision.
