New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu government has approved the construction of six greenfield institutions, who will get the freedom to offer any course and fix their own fees.

According to the latest reports, Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy, said that a trust can apply to the government for permission to build a greenfield university if it has 100 acres of land and a deposit of Rs. 50 crore.

Six universities were granted permission after the state government received nine petitions from prestigious institutions, he said. 

Saveetha and Jeppiaar are two of the six universities that recently received approval to build greenfield universities. 

The officials reported that the Tamil Nadu Private Universities Act, 2019, authorised the establishment of the private university known as the "greenfield university." 

The reports suggest that One of the state's first new universities, Shiv Nadar University in Chennai, is currently accepting students for admission. 

Commenting about the same, D. Karthikeyan, secretary of higher education, said that they have a conducive atmosphere and there is huge potential in the field of education. In the last year, 31 new colleges have been established by the state government.

The higher education minister said that the state government recently surveyed the state along with the guidance bureau to find out the requirements of the sector. 

The state government intends to launch fresh courses depending on local needs rather than commencing standard courses. For instance, Cuddalore, which has a SIPCOT industrial park, requires more people with degrees in chemistry, he said.

Meanwhile, the BEd counselling for government and government-aided institutes of education began on October 12. This year, a total of 5,138 applications for the 2040 vacant seats at 21 government and government-aided colleges of education, Ponmudy said.
