New Delhi: The Supreme Court has asked for a response from the Centre regarding a petition filed by BDS students to reduce the NEET-BDS cut-off scores for the year 2021-22. A notice was sent to the Centre regarding the same on May 11, 2022.

Supreme Court Urges Centre to Response on Lowering of NEET-BDS Courses Cut-Off Marks

The Centre had previously declined to decrease the cut-off marks, but students had appealed the decision through the aforementioned plea.

Candidates who took the NEET-UG exam filed a PIL to conduct a new mop-up round counselling based on the decreased cut-off marks proposed by the Dental Council to fill up the vacant seats in colleges for the academic session 2021-22. During the hearing of this PIL, the notice was issued.

Senior advocate PS Patwalia, representing BDS applicants, claimed that out of 27,698 seats for BDS courses, about 9,000 were still vacant as of today. However, arguing for the Centre, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati has refuted the assertion and provided a note claiming that the statistics in the chart were incorrect and that a further affidavit with the correct number will be filed shortly.

A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Sanjiv Khanna, and Surya Kant heard the plea. It has requested a response from the Centre on specific points such as the total number of eligible candidates after deducting admissions granted for BDS and MBBS courses, the total number of vacant seats in the All India Quota and State Quota, and the total number of seats available in government colleges, private colleges, and deemed colleges.

The court urged the Centre to explain why it was not allowing to decrease the percentile in light of available seats in government and private or deemed colleges. The Supreme Court Bench further noted that the Dental Council of India had advised the Centre to lower the cut-off percentage.
