Punjab government will soon launch three new medical colleges in Mohali, Hoshiarpur, and Kapurthala at a cost of over INR 1000 crore.

Punjab Medical Education Minister, Om Parkash Soni, confirmed the news. He informed that the facility in Mohal would begin in 2021, while the medical colleges in Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala have been approved by the Government and would start in 2022.

Soni also disclosed that a burn unit would be set up at Rajindra Hospital Patiala soon, and a trauma center would start. The art cancer center would be started at Amritsar for INR 120 crore. It will be functional by the year 2021, with a capacity of 150 beds. Besides, a separate department of Virology would begin at Government Medical College, Amritsar, he further stated.

Meanwhile, lecture halls, examination halls, and hostels would be ready in the medical college at INR 58 crores. INR 28 crores would be used for Boundary Wall, Mortuary, Nursing Hostel, Laundry Plant, among others.

Further, he added that a new substation would be constructed at Amritsar Medical College to meet the power shortage problems. The super-specialty block and five new operation theatres were being initiated at Faridkot. Two new hostels would be opened at Jalalabad and one at Goindwal Sahib, along with a pharmacy building for over INR 5 crores. 

Diploma courses are being introduced at Baba Farid University Hospital at Badal and Jalalabad. Also, an indoor stadium was being built at Baba Farid University Faridkot at INR 6 crores, under the Khelo India Khelo scheme

Soni stated, "Punjab Government has initiated proceedings for setting up State of Art Advanced Virology Center at INR 550 crore in Mohali, in which virology education, research, and testing facilities will be provided. This project is being funded by ICMR.

The Minister also clarified that the recruitment will be started after creating new posts in Dental College, Patiala, and Amritsar. Similarly, PGI Satellite Center Sangrur would be completed in 2021-22 and the construction work of Satellite Center, Ferozepur would be started soon. 

New posts would be offered and recruited at Ayurvedic College, Patiala, further adding that the proposal for establishing a new college and hospital at Guru Ravidas Ayurved University, Hoshiarpur was under review, he added.

He also highlighted that the Department of Medical Education and Research was planning to recruit 726 persons under the Ghar Ghar Rozgar Yojana next year, consisting of 42 doctors, 189 nurses, and 234 technicians.

A separate cadre of posts to be formed in the year 2021 to make the Department of Medical Education and Research more quick, rapid, accurate, and up-to-date. Some cadres like Nurses, Radiographers will be separated to improve the efficiency of the department, under the restructuring policy.

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Soni informed that over 21,000 tests per day were being performed in 3 labs of Government Medical Colleges in the state. Besides 5500 tests were being conducted daily in 4 new labs (2 Mohali, 1 Ludhiana, and 1 Jalandhar) taking the total tally of RT-PCR tests to 26500 per day. 

Soni stated that it was a matter of honor for the state that currently the lab of Government Medical College, Patiala can execute 10,000 tests per day that is the highest number in the country.
