New Delhi: In a recent statement, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated that the central government has no immediate plans to merge Common University Entrance Test (CUET) with NEET UG and JEE Main in the upcoming session of 2023.

The Education Minister informed that the central government is planning to merge the three national-level undergraduate tests: NEET UG and JEE Mains with CUET (Common University Entrance Test) in the coming years. However, the plan will not be executed in 2023.

“Nobody should be worried, the way you have been studying and preparing till now, continue with that. There is no immediate plan to merge the JEE Main and NEET UG exams with CUET" Pradhan said

In order to merge NEET-UG and JEE Main with the CUET exam, the government will prepare a detailed plan and prepare an expert committee that will take care of the necessary steps. As of now, the exam authority and government have not taken any decisions in this regard.

Earlier, the UGC Chairman has announced that the government will merge NEET, JEE with CUET to lessen the burden on students of preparing for different entrance exams for admission purposes. With this, the country will follow the goal of "one nation, one entrance test".

He further stated that no clear plan for this initiative has been finalized till yet. The necessary steps will be taken once the relevant stakeholders and the conducting authority of the exams, NTA is well prepared to execute the new common admission test.

The first step towards achieving the goal of "one nation, one entrance test" will be to form a committee that will review the exam process and syllabus for NEET UG and JEE Main. It will then consider the potential for an integrated, single-entrance exam for UG & PG admissions.

After this, the draft proposal for the same will be made available for stakeholders, NTA, and interested participants to check and review. The recommendations made will be reviewed and further changes will be made to the plan, he added.

In addition to this, the authority is planning to conduct the CUET more than once in a year from the next sessions. This will be done so that students who could not appear in the first phase will have the opportunity to write the examination in the second phase.

With this, those who wish to improve their marks will also have the option to appear for the phase 2 exam and get admission to their preferred choice of subjects. Based on marks secured, students will be selected for admission to CUET score accepting colleges in the country.
