The Karnataka Health Minister Dr. K Sudhakar stated that the Karnataka Government is working towards the improvement of the public healthcare system and plans to build a medical college in each district.

Sudhakar was presented at the inauguration of the newly constructed administrative building complex of the Health and Family Welfare Department, the ‘Arogya Soudha’ at Magadi Road, Bangalore on December 28, 2020.

He spoke at the inauguration ceremony and stated that despite the financial issues caused because of the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic, the Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa is revitalizing the health sectors.

Despite the COVID 19 pandemic persisting in the country, the chief minister has approved four new medical colleges in the last one and half years out of which three are already functional. The inauguration of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences, Bengaluru will be held on December 30, 2020, says Sudhakar.

A total of 18 government medical colleges are available in Karnataka and 9 districts do not have any medical colleges. The Government is planning to construct a medical college under suitable models in these 9 districts.

District hospitals and super-speciality hospitals will also be attached with these 9 medical colleges, Sudhakar stated.

Considering the COVID 19 pandemic, he said that 30,000 oxygenated beds were available in Karnataka which is six times higher than the number of beds available at the beginning of the pandemic. 

The doctors and frontline workers will also be provided special allowance at a cost of INR 125 crores, K Sudhakar said.

The Health Minister also stated, "About 1.5 percent of the GDP is being spent on healthcare in our country. PM Narendra Modi has assured that healthcare spending will be increased to 2.5 per cent. Arogya Soudha will facilitate better integration within the Health Department by bringing 53 offices under one roof including NHM, SAST."

The Karnataka CM Yeddyurappa who inaugurated the new building appreciated the Health Minister K Sudhakar stating that he has put honest efforts to contain the spread of COVID 19 infection in the state.
