New Delhi: Indian Institue of Technology, Banaras Hindu University (IIT-BHU) has received a donation of $1million from alumni through the IIT-BHU foundation. The donation was received from the famous Boston-based entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr.Desh Deshpande and his wife Jaishree Deshpande.
IIT-BHU will name the library after the father of the donator, Shreenivas Deshpande. He was a 1948 graduate of the College of Technology. On June 24, 2022, the naming ceremony will be held on the campus.
Arjun Tripathi, IIT-BHU founder president, has said “We are thankful to Desh and his wife Jaishree for this very thoughtful gift. They are well-known philanthropists. However, this gift is very special to the Foundation as it is across generations, reflecting upon the Institute’s transformative impact.”
Professor Pramod Kumar Jain, IIT-BHU director, said a thankful note to Dr Desh Deshpande and his wife Jayshree Deshpande, “It is the achievements of distinguished alumni that inspire the faculty and staff to train the technology leaders of the future. We are humbled to be naming the library in honour of Shreenivas Deshpande because he is a living embodiment of the power of knowledge to transform society.”
IIT-BHU Receives $1m Donation: Highlights
According to a spokesperson of IIT-BHU, Shreenivas Deshpande after completing his B.Sc programme in first class in Industrial Chemistry in the year 1948, worked in the public sector for the next 31 years. He retired in the year 1980 as a joint commissioner of labour for the government of Karnataka.
Shreenivas Deshpande served as the president of Chinmaya Mission in Hubbali and as the chairman of the Sharieff Trust. It is in his honour that IIT-BHU has planned to name the campus library after him. The IIT-BHU foundation’s board of governors have expressed heartfelt gratitude for this gift to Dr Desh Deshpande and his wife Jayshree Deshpande.
Professor Rajiv Srivastav, Dean (resource and alumni affairs), also expressed his sincere gratitude to Dr Deshpande for such a generous gift. He said that the contribution to the library will help in empowering the academic and research community in the institution.
In other news, IIT-BHU admission window is open for the academic year 2022-2023 for PG and PhD courses.Candidates interested and eligible can apply for the courses from the official website of the university.
