New Delhi: Academic Council of Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has announced that the university has approved the conduction of an entrance exam for shortlisting candidates for admission to its PhD program in all departments.
As per HPU, the decision has been taken by the Standing Committee of the Academic Council during a meeting held on the campus ground on November 15, 2022. During the meeting, the authorities announced that it will conduct the entrance exam in accordance with UGC norms.
Informing about the decision, the university officials stated that this decision has been made in view of the controversy over giving admission for the HPU PhD courses to wards of teachers and employees of the university without an entrance examination.
The university constituted a committee to look into this matter concerning admission to PhD courses. Based on the recommendations made by the committee headed by Professor Kulbhushan Chandel, it has decided to conduct an entrance exam for HPU PhD admissions.
Many student organisations, including the Students Federation of India (SFI), were against offering admission to staff members to PhD programs without an entrance exam. They requested an entrance exam so that all applicants would have an equal chance to be accepted.
Meanwhile, the Himachal Pradesh Government College Teachers have also been opposed to any changes in the admission process since associate professor positions at colleges have required associate professors to hold a PhD entrance exam.
Now, it has been decided that admission to university teaching positions will only be granted if there is an opening in that specific department. By offering admission through an entrance examination, any possibility of unfair benefit to any student will be eliminated.
