New Delhi: Gauhati University (GU) has rescheduled the offline PG and Integrated M.Com Odd Semester exams owing to the massive surge in COVID cases.
According to the official notice issued by the Controller of Examinations, GU on January, 20, the offline exams, earlier scheduled on January 21, 22 and 24, 2022, will be rescheduled. The students will be notified of the new dates by the university shortly.
According to the notice, the other examinations, scheduled from January 27, will be conducted as per the schedule. The practical examination will also be conducted as per the schedule
Prior to this decision, an increasing number of COVID cases were reportedly being detected among the students. As per the sources, many students returned to the hostels after celebrating Bihu.
“We are not aware whether COVID is the reason for rescheduling the exams, but the fact that a majority of the boarders are yet to return to the hostels could be a reason why the exams on the first three days had to be deferred,”, as an official stated.
Earlier, NSUI Assam had demanded “immediate closure of all the educational institutions across the state”. Moreover, it suggested that the examinations should be conducted in blended mode (online/offline both). GU was also closed for five days as a precautionary measure earlier after 21 students had tested positive for COVID in December, 2021.
The positivity rate continues to push the 12 percent mark with 7929 new COVID cases reported in Assam in the evening of January 20. The metro district of Kamrup alone reported 1,716 COVID cases. Approximately 12 deaths were also reported in the state on Thursday.
Earlier, many educational institutions were compelled to postpone and reschedule the scheduled examinations due to the rise in COVID Omicron cases.
JNUTH postponed their end semester exams as per the decision made by the Telangana State Government. Likewise, Osmania University also postponed the exams scheduled between January 8-16 due to the COVID crisis.
In the state of Uttar Pradesh, Lucknow University closed its campus to prevent further spreading of COVID among its students. The university also postponed the semester exams, originally scheduled between January 15-31.
