Board of Governors of MCI(Medical Council of India ) approved for increasing the Postgraduate medical intakes in MD and MS courses by 4800 taking the total available MD/MS seats to 36,192 for the academic session 2020-21. This trend of increasing the number of seats is expected to continue for this year as well taking the total counselling seat count to more than 40,000 for the 2021-22 academic sessions. To encounter the shortage of qualified doctors and manage a gap in medical education, the Niti Aayog decided to workout with the public-private partnership (PPP) model that will link private medical colleges with operational district hospitals to increase medical seats. With this new scheme, every PG student will have to serve in the district hospital for a term of three months to be able to be eligible for the Degree. The sole objective of the scheme is to justify the cost of medical education.

MCC has brought some changes in the counselling process of NEET PG. The candidates will be required to register again if they are participating in the second round of counselling. Last year, registration for the second round of counselling was not required.
Candidates will be called for NEET PG 2021 Counselling as per their ranks (All India Rank, All India 50 % Quota Category Rank, All India 50 % Quota Rank, and State Quota Rank). Candidates will be required to fill the choice of courses and colleges in the counselling process. Candidates will get admission depending on their rank, filled preferences and availability of seats.

The counselling process will be controlled by MCC (Medical Counselling Committee) and DGHS (Directorate General of Health Services) in the online mode. Counselling will be conducted for giving admission to 50% All India Quota Seats. The State Government will take care of the seat allotment for the rest 50% of seats.

The step taken to increase the number of seats for PG medical courses will increase the overall standard in healthcare in India and also bring the justification to the cost of pursuing higher studies in medicine and surgery.
