National Law University, Delhi will conduct AILET 2020 on May 3, 2020 in computer based mode. 50% reservation of seats are introduced for Students of Delhi and the remaining are alloted under All India Level Seats for B.A.LLB and LLM program. Candidates who have passed/ Appearing in their qualifying exam from a college located in Delhi Region can apply under this category. This key change was announced with the release of AILET 2020 Application Form on January 15, 2020. Candidates can fill out the form till March 31, 2020.

A complete breakup of seats in AILET 2020 is provided by the conducting university. A total of 110 seats are offered in the Undergraduate program and 70 in the Post Graduate program. 10 seats are reserved for direct admission to foreign nationals, whereas supernumerary seats are kept for Residents of Jammu and Kashmir/ Kashmiri MIgrants.

AILET 2020 Eligibility for Students of Delhi

Candidates applying under ‘Students of Delhi’ category and claiming reservation based for SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS category have to produce valid caste/income certificates.

Candidates who are Indian National and have Passed/ Appearing in their qualifying examination from anywhere in the country are eligible under All India Level Seats.

AILET 2020 Seat Allotment for Foreign National

Candidates who hold citizenship of another country apart from India and carry a valid Passport to verify the same are considered as Foreign Nationals. They are exempted from appearing in AILET 2020 and are eligible for Direct admissions.

Candidates coming under the OCI/PIO category have the choice to apply either under Foreign Nationals category or Indian Students (For which they have to Appear for AILET 2020).

If seats go unfilled under this category, they will be carried to Unreserved qualified candidates on the basis of AILET Merit.

State Based Reservations: Trends across NLU’s

All the NLUs across India have been gradually implementing domicile based reservation. NLU Delhi is the latest law institute to put it in practice. With the admission season just around the corner, let us have a look at the reservation scenario in other NLUs:

Know Differences between CLAT and AILET

• NALSAR Hyderabad had initially proposed 50% reservation for candidates from the local state in 2017 but currently the reservation percentage stands at 20%.
• NLSIU Bangalore has a 20% reservation but there is a major demand from the locals to increase it to 50%.
• NLU Jodhpur had proposed 25% local reservation in 2018 but the reservation has not been implemented as of now.

This news comes as a great relief to local students from Delhi. Domicile based reservation will ensure greater opportunities for students of Delhi, who often were overshadowed by students from outside. However, many faculty members, students, alumni and aspirants have expressed deep concerns about the validity of such reservations. There has been a surge of opinions against this trend of domicile based reservations in NLUs.

They argue that such local reservations will compromise the national pan-India character of the national law universities. National law universities promise a cosmopolitan environment, which may diminish owing to such reservations. The former president of NUJS student union, Arjun Agarwal, has expressed his concern about domicile quotas.
