New Delhi: Despite Delhi University’s repeated warnings to St Stephen's College to conduct admissions based on CUET scores, the Delhi High Court issued a PIL on June 1, asking it to review its admission criteria for conducting an interview round for unreserved seats.
In the PIL filed by law student Konika Poddar, the Division Bench of Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Sachin Datta issued a notice to St Stephen's College.
For a long time, DU and St Stephen's have been in disagreement over the admission procedure for the academic year 2022-23. Despite DU's demands and warnings for St Stephen's to use the CUET scores, the college decided to continue with interviews.
The issue increased when the prospectus for admissions of St Stephen's College for the academic year 2022-23 was issued and it stated that it will conduct admissions for all categories on an 85 to 15 ratio, with 15% weightage given to interviews and 85% given to CUET scores.
According to the notification, St Stephen's College, DU, and the UGC have four weeks to file their response. The matter has been scheduled for a hearing on July 6, 2022. The petition filed by Advocate Akash Vajpai claims that conducting interviews and leaving marks for subjective satisfaction encourages discrimination and manipulation by the selection committee.
According to the PIL, admissions to minority colleges such as St Stephen's for general category seats can only be provided based on the marks acquired in CUET 2022 for UG admissions. While interviews can be given 15% weightage for admission to reserved seats and CUET marks can be given 85% weightage.
Admission to undergraduate programmes at DU is usually based on the Class 12 results. However, from the past few years, the cut-off for admissions to several colleges has reached 100%. Based on this, a committee was formed when CUET 2022 was introduced and it stated that DU admissions 2022 can be carried out through CUET.
