New Delhi: As per the statement made in Lok Sabha by Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State and Ministry of Education, the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) was successfully conducted for all registered students this year and it did not cause any delays to the central universities’ academic calendar.

CUET 2022 Records 9.14 Lakh Registrations, Becomes Second Biggest Entrance Exam in India After NEET UG

At Lok Sabha, a member from the Indian National Congress, Deepak Baij questioned Sarkar about whether or not the students had to deal with a delay in admission to Central Universities. He said that the continual cancellation of CUET was to blame for the delay in the commencement of the academic session.

In defence, Sarkar informed the Lok Sabha that 54,555 different subject combinations were requested from 14,90,293 candidates who took the CUET in its first year. The test had a large scope, and some students struggled for technical and geo-climatic reasons; in these situations, the test was delayed.

However, overall, the procedure was successfully managed, he said. He further used Delhi University as an example to refute the claim that CUET has caused the academic calendar to be delayed, noting that classes at Delhi University began this year earlier than they did last year.

Additionally, the opposition questioned if the fee of UG students who complete their degrees through CUET had gone up. In response, Sarkar said: “There is no information that CUET has adversely affected the studies and it has resulted in cost escalation of graduation, rather the students were able to apply to more than one university with a single form and fee".

"This has resulted in saving on cost and effort needed to secure admission in the universities,” he explained. Sarkar further mentioned that a team of experts made up of professors from central institutions and IITs in India has been formed to make recommendations for how to conduct CUET in the coming years.

This was the first time that CUET was conducted nationwide for admission to UG and PG courses. All central universities were required to implement CUET UG this year by the National Testing Agency (NTA), and all other institutions were encouraged to do the same this year or in the near future.

Although CUET PG was not required for all postgraduate programmes, some universities did so this year, and a few more intend to do so the following year.
