Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) recently made some changes to the examinations for classes 9 to 12 for the academic year 2021-22. Students will encounter more competency-based questions beginning with the next academic session. For the question papers of classes 10 and 12, as well as classes 9 and 11, these are the questions that assess the application of concepts in real-life or unfamiliar situations.

In light of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the board has initiated these changes. Though the overall marks and duration of the examination will remain unchanged, the question papers for the upcoming academic session will include a greater number of competency-based questions or questions that assess the application of concepts in real-life situations.

The board has decided to include at least 30% competency-based questions in Class 9 and 10 exams, such as multiple choice questions (MCQs), case-based questions, source-based integrated questions, and so on.

According to the current CBSE pattern, approximately 20% of the questions are objective type, with the remaining 50% consisting of short and long answer type questions.

For classes 11 and 12, however, the exam pattern will be as follows: 20% competency-based questions, 20% objective type questions, and the remaining 60% will be short and long answer type questions.

CBSE to Host Wild Wisdom Global Challenge 2021 for Classes 6-9, Last Date to Apply is August 31

In an interview with Indian Express, Biswajit Saha, CBSE's director of Training and Skill Development, stated, "The pandemic has exposed the education system to change its traditional method." The board is attempting to shift the emphasis away from assessment of learning and toward assessment for learning. Furthermore, it is ensured that students are equipped with the ability to solve problems, and assessment must shift from primarily testing rote memorization skills to one that is more formative, promotes learning and development for our students, and tests higher-order skills.”

According to the order, all CBSE-affiliated schools have been asked to prepare their students for the outlined changes. In the coming days, the board will also release Sample Papers based on the revised assessment scheme so that students can gain a better understanding of it.

To compensate for the academic loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the board reduced the syllabus for classes 9 to 12 by 30% last year. Those deleted chapters have now been reinstated in the curriculum for 2021-22.
