Anna University Colleges: About 276 seats in B.Tech and BE courses at Anna University colleges remain vacant after students chose to discontinue their courses and take up other subjects like medicine.
The vacant seats opened up once these students moved to other courses even after receiving admission at top Tamil Nadu Colleges, as of College of Engineering (CEG), Anna University and Madras Institute of Technology (MIT), Chennai.
The seats that are left vacant were meant for top-ranking candidates. As per the latest updates, constituent colleges of Anna University have 75 vacant seats, CEG has 77 vacancies, ACT has 55 while School of Architecture and Planning has 2 vacant seats.
Experts claim the underlying reason for this situation is engineering counselling being conducted in one round compared to medical courses where multiple rounds are held. Additionally, online counselling has added to the wastage of seats which was easily avoided in case of a single window.

Professors at Anna University are of the opinion that seats began to open when the admission deadline was extended from August 15-31 by the Hon’ble Supreme Court. Thus, students got enough time to choose other preferred colleges and add to vacancies.
As per M K Surappa, Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, Bachelor of Engineering (BE) and B.Tech counselling should be delayed until IITs and NITs begin their counselling process. He added, “It should conduct a second round to fill vacant engineering seats after medical counselling.”
