Early literary history studies the literature of the Middle Ages, and is thus also concerned with literature prior to the invention of printing; modern literary history is concerned with literature from the 16th century to the present day.
- Literary history interprets the meaning and the effects of novels, plays, and poetry, as well as the interaction with other media. It examines the development of cultural traditions and the origins of cultural changes.
