Bioinformatics is a young, rapidly developing science in the border area between mathematics, computer science, biology, medicine, biochemistry, and biophysics. She develops computer-aided methods to solve current research tasks in biology and medicine. This includes the analysis of DNA, RNA and protein sequences as well as the analysis of protein structures and their complexes and the interaction of the individual components in complex systems (systems biology). Bioinformatics has become indispensable in modern drug design as well as in the development of new therapies.
