Mathematics has always been both basic and application-oriented. On the one hand, mathematics is the common language for describing structural and quantitative relationships in the natural, engineering and economic sciences. With the help of mathematical models, mathematical solution processes and their implementation on computers, it is increasingly possible to analyze, simulate and optimize complex processes in all of these sciences. On the other hand, basic mathematical research has made tremendous progress in the past decades, which in turn have found completely surprising applications, such as number theory / algebraic geometry in cryptography.
