What is M.Tech Chemical Engineering?

The M.Tech in Chemical Engineering course is considered to be the engineering equivalent of an M.Phil in the Humanities sphere. It primarily focuses upon the applications of concepts learnt at the undergraduate level, and extending these applications through research study.

Who should opt for M.Tech Chemical Engineering?

Candidates opting for this course should have a strong background in the basic concepts being covered. This includes fluid dynamics, process control, semi-conductor processing and other such topics. The course is heavily research oriented, and only those interested in entering this field are advised to opt for this course.

Duration

The course is a two year programme, usually following the semester system, i.e. a total of four semesters. This includes certain time periods set aside for Project Work and Research Work.

M.Tech Chemical Engineering Colleges

The primary institutes that offer the M.Tech in Chemical Engineering programme are the elite Indian Institutes of Technology. This course continues to be highly popular in a number of institutes across the country as well.

Name of the Institute City/Region
Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (Mumbai), Kanpur, Guwahati
Anna University Chennai
Manipal Institute of Technology Udupi, Karnataka
Indian Institute of Space and Technology Thiruvanathapuram, Kerala
Institute of Chemical Technology Mumbai, Maharashtra

M.Tech Chemical Engineering Eligibility

Most institutes state minimum eligibility to be an undergraduate B.Tech degree in Chemical Engineering. - The Indian Institutes of Technology have the added eligibility criteria of a valid GATE score, which is only relaxed for those who have obtained their B.Tech from an IIT with a CGPA of more than 8.0/10 as well.

Note- Some institutes allow the equivalent forms of B.Tech in Chemical Engineering, such as  a B.E. in the same field.

M.Tech Chemical Engineering Selection Process

The selection process generally consists of a written examination and an interview thereafter.

  • Candidates applying to IIT must have a valid GATE score as well. Direct admission is offered to students lying in a particularly high percentile range, but they are given the option of refusing this in favor of writing the admission test for other specializations. Other candidates must write a separate written test as well if required by the institution.
  • The Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT) and other such institutes have their own entrance examination, and selection is based purely on the ranks obtained here. A valid GATE score may still be of advantage, as institutions such as MIT give a 10% increase to the entrance examination score based on GATE performance.

M.Tech Chemical Engineering Admission Process

The admission process differs depending on the institute, but the general structure remains the same.

  • Given the relatively short duration of the course and the intensive workload required, almost all institutes offering M.Tech in Chemical Engineering do not have the facility of lateral entry.
  • While distance mode is not explicitly offered, majority of the institutes offer a part – time option to facilitate the working candidates. The IITs also allow certain relaxations in the case of a research fellowship or a teaching assistant within the same institute.
  • Reservation policy is according to the Rules set by the Government of India.
  • Direct admission is granted in the Indian Institutes of Technology based purely on merit as seen through performance in GATE, depending on percentile obtained.

M.Tech Chemical Engineering Salary and Jobs

Students who graduate with an M.Tech degree in Chemical Engineering have a multitude of prospects available to them. This ranges from industrial work to research work, and are usually believed to offer a starting salary in the range of Rs. 50,000, which may increase with experience and specialization.

Designation Description Expected Salary
Process Engineer Analyzing and working with the process systems >4,00,000 annually
Lecturers Teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate level >30,000 monthly
Engineers in Oil and gas Industry etc. Implementing various systems in the industry >25,000 monthly
Engineers (with experience) in industry such as Pharmaceutical, Biotechnology etc. Application oriented contributions to the functioning of the company >35,000 monthly

M.Tech Chemical Engineering Course Structure

The M. Tech in Chemical Engineering course does not have a fixed structure across institutions, except for the semester system. It is highly based on specializations and practical work. Therefore, the course is structured around a credit system, with no set pattern of examinations or other such processes being universally defined.

Almost all courses, however, do dedicate at least one full semester to project work and research work, in the field of specialization chosen.

M.Tech Chemical Engineering Scheme of Assessment

There is no fixed scheme of assessment, as the specializations may differ, and the method of assessment for each depends on the institution, the course and the lecturer. The assessment pattern is based on the credit system, with most considering this course to be a 60-credit course across its four semesters.

Project work and contributions to research hold significant weightage in the overall CGPA obtained, as do practical and industrial work.
